English Setter - Abby - Medium - Adult - Female - Dog
Abby was rescued from a backyard breeder this past April, and eight days later she gave birth to four beautiful puppies, one girl and three boys. Abby very quickly proved that she was wonderful Mama and took great care of her babies. Abby is a gorgeous 2-3 year old tri color English Setter. She is sweet and gets along with all dogs she has met in rescue. She is not playing with other dogs, and tends to do her own thing so she would be good with any age dogs. Cats are another story. Clearly she did not have cats in her pack before rescue and she is very intense about hunting the cats in the foster home. She is so focused on the cats that she does not pay attention to correction so we believe a home without cats is best for her so she is attentive to the people and all of the fun of learning to be a house dog with good house manners. Abby puppies were adopted to wonderful homes, and Abbie has been spayed. She is no longer swollen and her coat covers most of the signs that she nursed her puppies. She is fully vaccinated, tested negative for heartworms, fecal and she is micro-chipped and on heartworm preventative. The only thing her new family will need to work on is house-training and house manners. Abby spent her first 2 years living outside and she is much like a puppy herself; she is learning how to behave in the house. Abby is crate trained and should probably be crated when she is left alone. Abby prefers the cozy feeling of a plastic crate instead of a wire crate, and she will often go into her crate by herself to take a nap. She is very curious and an excellent "counter surfer" and will probably find things to chew on or eat if left unsupervised. Abby is very eager to please and is learning to stay off of the counters when her foster mom tells her "no". Abby gets very excited about food and about affection; otherwise, she is not super high energy. She prefers to be inside and will only run around the backyard for a short time before wanting to come back inside. Her foster mom is hoping that as she gains confidence in her new situation, she will spend more time outside. Abby notices birds, but hasn't been as interested in hunting them in the yard as the other dogs in her foster home. Abby loves to go for walks and will pull when she sees birds or rabbits. She is currently being walked in an Easy-Walk harness, and learning her leash manners quickly. Abby wants to be a lap dog and snuggle, but she gets so excited when she is sitting with her person that she mostly just wiggles a lot. She is very submissive and will often roll over for belly rubs. Abby is highly food-driven. She gets very excited when she hear/sees/smells food and will jump up and run in circles. She is not food aggressive with other dogs, but will try to steal treats right out of their mouths so caution should be taken when feeding her around other dogs to prevent conflicts. Abby is very smart and eager to please and her foster mom is working with her on food manners. Abby knows she has to sit in order to receive treats, but she has a hard time controlling herself and jumps up before sitting. She is also working on not grabbing food out of people's hands. Abby will sometimes put her mouth on your hands when she is looking for food or attention, but she has never bitten down and is easily corrected with a stern "no". Abby is sweet and gentle with children, but caution should be taken around food, since she tends to jump up and grab and could easily knock over or scare a small child. Abby has quickly learned that she is not allowed to eat people food and will move to a respectful distance while her foster mom is eating. Abby's future family must be committed to continuing her training and making her mind her manners. Abby is great around other dogs and has made friends with every dog she has met so far. From time to time, she will initiate play with dogs in her foster home. She may need a few weeks to settle into a new home, but will probably be an excellent companion for another dog. Abby loves being part of a family instead of living outside. She will m
